Canadian wellness brand UK outbound expansion at Boots and Holland and Barrett — MOART case study

Project Overview

Outbound expansions from Canada into the UK are not symmetrical with inbound work in either direction: MHRA classification on borderline cosmetic-versus-medicinal claims can reclassify a Canadian wellness product as a regulated medicine, Boots head-office buyer cycles run on a different calendar than North American retailers, and post-Brexit customs paperwork now requires both EORI registration and product-specific tariff classifications that did not exist in the pre-2021 trading environment. The strategic problem was sequencing MHRA review, Boots buyer engagement, and customs architecture as parallel workstreams so the launch did not stall on whichever workstream ran slowest.

Execution

MOART filed MHRA classification queries on the 6 borderline SKUs ahead of Boots buyer engagement to remove regulatory uncertainty from the listing conversation, ran the Boots category-buyer engagement on Boots's own calendar rather than retrofitting a Canadian timeline, negotiated parallel Holland & Barrett placement to give the brand two UK channels rather than channel concentration risk, and built the EORI-registered customs architecture with a UK-side 3PL to bypass the Brexit-era delays that had stalled prior Canadian wellness entries.

Project Results

6 SKUs MHRA-cleared on first review, 11 SKUs listed across 87 Boots flagship locations, 142 Holland & Barrett stores activated through the parallel channel, and the UK-side 3PL holding replenishment lead-time at 8 days against the 21-day pre-engagement baseline.
