Walmart is one of the largest single retail buyers in the world, and the process to become a vendor is far more structured than most international brands expect. The mistake we see most often is treating Walmart like any other retail account. It is not. Walmart has its own systems, its own compliance expectations, and its own pace, and a brand that arrives unprepared can lose months before securing a single purchase order.

The first step is the supplier proposal submission through Retail Link or the Walmart Supplier Center. This is the gateway. Walmart will not accept email pitches, phone calls to a buyer, or LinkedIn outreach as a substitute for a formal submission. The proposal is reviewed by category management, not by a single buyer, and the review timeline is typically four to eight weeks.

If the proposal advances, the second step is a category review meeting. These are scheduled rarely throughout the year for each category, and you should expect to wait for the next window. The buyer team uses this meeting to compare your product against existing assortment, competitive submissions, and what they call white space in the category.

Steps three through seven are the operational and compliance layer. Vendor agreement signing, insurance verification at the required limits, EDI integration testing, payment terms negotiation, and the first purchase order acceptance. Each of these has its own documentation and its own approval path. Brands that try to compress this into weeks rather than months tend to introduce errors that cost them their slot.

The most important advice we give clients is that Walmart vendor onboarding is not a sales process. It is a procurement and operations process. The buyer is one stakeholder. Procurement, legal, supply chain, and finance are all gatekeepers. Treating this engagement as a full company sale rather than a single relationship gives your brand a meaningful advantage.
